Cardew licence and terms of sale

Last updated:
5 November 2026

Plain terms for trying, buying and using Cardew. They don’t take away any rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.

The short version

  • A one-off licence covers up to 3 Macs you own or personally use, with all 1.x updates.
  • Try every feature for 14 days of actual use. After that, free mode allows recordings up to 30 seconds.
  • Stripe through Link is the reseller and merchant of record for your purchase.
  • You own what you dictate. Check important text before relying on it.

1. These terms

These terms govern your Cardew licence and purchase from Greythorn Studio Works (“we”, “us”), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. By buying a licence, installing Cardew or entering a licence key, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, don’t install or use the software.

Stripe, through Link, acts as reseller and merchant of record for the sale. Stripe’s checkout terms also apply to payment, tax and its services. These terms continue to govern the Cardew licence, software and our support commitments. If there is an inconsistency about payment processing, Stripe’s terms govern that part.

2. Your licence

When you buy Cardew, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it on up to 3 Apple Silicon Macs that you own or personally use, provided you follow these terms. The licence includes every update released in the 1.x line. A later major version, such as 2.0, may require a new purchase or paid upgrade; we’ll make that clear before you choose to buy it.

You may keep one backup copy. You must not rent, resell or share your licence key for use beyond your own Macs, or remove copyright or licence notices. You can stop using Cardew at any time.

3. Trial and permanent free mode

Cardew includes a trial of 14 days of actual use with every feature. No payment details are needed. Days on which you don’t use Cardew don’t count towards the trial.

After the trial, Cardew moves to a permanent free mode with recordings capped at 30 seconds. It does not delete your settings or content. A valid licence removes the recording cap. Free mode also applies if a licence is deactivated, refunded or removed.

4. Price, payment and delivery

Cardew costs A$29 as a one-off purchase. Launch price A$19 for the first 100 buyers. Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST where it applies. The checkout shown at the time of purchase sets out the amount payable.

Stripe processes the payment, handles applicable sales taxes and issues your receipt through Stripe or Link. We never receive your full card number. A licence key is delivered separately after a successful purchase. You’re responsible for providing an email address that can receive it.

Our refund policy explains the 30-day refund offer and what happens to your licence after a refund.

5. Activation and updates

Activating or managing a licence requires an internet connection. Cardew can work offline after activation, although occasional online validation may be needed to confirm that the licence remains active. The 3-Mac limit applies to active installations; you can remove a Mac to free a place.

Updates are optional unless a change is needed for security or legal reasons. An update may require a newer compatible Mac or operating system. Update checks don’t require payment information or dictation content.

6. Reasonable use

Except where the law or an open-source licence gives you the right, you must not copy Cardew beyond the licence above, modify, reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, or circumvent its licence checks. You must not use Cardew unlawfully or interfere with the licence or update services.

7. Third-party models and software

Cardew includes NVIDIA’s Parakeet model under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 and FluidAudio under Apache License 2.0. Those components remain under their own licences, described on the Cardew acknowledgements and in the software’s notices. Nothing in these terms reduces your rights under those licences.

8. Check important text

Speech recognition can mishear, mistype or insert text in the wrong place. You’re responsible for checking the result before relying on or sending it, particularly for medical, legal, financial or safety-critical work. Only record or transcribe other people with any consent the law requires.

9. Your content

You own what you dictate. Cardew processes it on your Mac and we don’t receive your audio or transcribed text. Our privacy notice explains the separate licensing and update connections.

10. Australian Consumer Law

Our goods and services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. If you’re a consumer, you’re entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You’re also entitled to have goods repaired or replaced if they fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure doesn’t amount to a major failure.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies those rights. Our refund offer is in addition to them and doesn’t limit when you can exercise them.

11. Availability and liability

Subject to section 10 and to the extent the law allows, Cardew is provided with the features described on our website when you buy. We don’t promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or compatible with every app or configuration.

Where the law allows us to limit liability for breach of a consumer guarantee for goods or services not ordinarily acquired for personal, domestic or household use, our liability is limited, at our option, to resupplying the software or paying the cost of resupplying it. Subject to those consumer guarantees, we aren’t liable for indirect or consequential loss, or loss of data, profit or opportunity. Our total liability for any other claim connected with Cardew is limited to the amount you paid for your licence.

12. Ending a licence

We may end your licence if you materially breach these terms and don’t fix the breach within a reasonable time after we tell you. If we end it for another reason not covered by your existing consumer rights, we’ll refund a fair proportion of your payment for the lost use. A full refund deactivates the licence as described in our refund policy. When a licence ends, stop using and uninstall the full software.

13. Changes

We may update these terms for future versions, service changes or changes in the law. A change won’t reduce rights under a licence you’ve already bought without your agreement, except where the law requires it.

14. General

These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia, and the non-exclusive jurisdiction of its courts, without affecting your rights under the Australian Consumer Law or another law that applies. If part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.

If something goes wrong, email support@greythornstudioworks.com. We’ll try in good faith to resolve the problem before either of us takes it further.
